How old is my boiler?

Whether you think it’s time to replace your boiler or not, it’s always useful to know when your boiler was installed. If it’s over 10 years old then it’s often an indication that your boiler is inefficient and you’ll likely be paying more to heat your home.

Landlords will also need to comply the the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). This means you won't be able to rent out a property with an energy rating of F or G after April 1st 2018.

Find out your boiler's serial number

The easiest way to find out the age of your boiler is to look for its serial number. A serial number is a long sequence of numbers & letters that are unique for that boiler - the number can be found in a few different places such as a drop-down front panel, the side or underneath the boiler. If you have the installation manual handy then it will most likely be in there.

Hidden inside the serial number is the year the boiler was manufactured - below is a breakdown of the different boiler manufacturers and where their serial numbers contain the install year.

How old is my boiler?

Baxi boilers are pretty simple to find the serial number, they usually have a sticker on the front of the boiler, or if you have a drop down panel it will likely be on the inside of the panel.

When you find the serial number, go to the 4th and 5th number of the serial code and this will be the year the boiler was manufactured - pictured below for reference.

So, the 4th and 5th numbers are 0 and 6 which means this boiler was manufactured in 2006.

Although Worcester Bosch is one of the most popular boiler brands, it is virtually impossible to date their products unless you’re a professional. Their serial numbers were designed for internal use only.

No matter how old a Worcester Bosch boiler is, its serial number will contain an FD number that has the production date coded in. So, if you need to tell the age of your Worcester Bosch boiler, you need to contact their support team on 0330 123 3366.

It'snot all bad news though, if you know the fuel type, boiler type and model name then you can use the official industry database that will give you a tonne of information about the model of your boiler - it won't be exact for your boiler but it will be pretty close.

For Vaillant boilers, the serial number is usually found on a sticker, either on the boiler itself or inside the front panel of your boiler - you should see a bar code underneath.

When you find the serial number, go to the 3rd and 4th number of the serial code, and this will be the year the boiler was manufactured - pictured below for reference.

So, the 3rd and 4th numbers are 0 and 1 which means this boiler was manufactured in 2001.

This depends on which ideal boiler model you have, there are 3 different types of serial codes and they are as follows:

Ideal Logic/ Ideal M Series boilers

The serial number is usually displayed on a barcoded sticker at the top of your boiler.

When you find the serial number, go the very end code and this will be the manufacture date. Pre-2015 boilers are dated as the following format: YY/MM/DD, post -2015 boilers are dated following the normal UK format: DD/MM/YY - pictured below for reference.

So, the manufacture date for the above boiler was 18th of August 2008.

Ideal Classic

The serial number is usually displayed on a barcoded sticker at the top of your boiler.

This number will be smaller than the Ideal logic serial code. Go to the 3rd cluster of numbers, they represent the year and week of the boiler being manufactured - pictured below for reference.

So, the manufacture date for the above boiler was 2006 in the 12th week.

Ideal Mini

The serial number is usually displayed on a barcoded sticker at the top of your boiler.

This number will be smaller than the Ideal Classic serial code, so you'll want to go to the last 4 digits and this represents the month and year the boiler was manufactured - pictured below for reference.

So, the manufacture date for the above boiler was March 2008.
