Save on your energy bills with the Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme

The Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme (GHGVS) has been introduced by the Government to improve energy efficiency in domestic properties.

Among the range of primary measures included in the scheme are air source heat pumps, ground-source heat pumps and hybrid heat pumps. These energy-saving solutions can dramatically reduce your household bills and CO2 emissions, as well as add real added value to your property.

The two main options are air source heat pumps, which use air and electricity to create heat, and ground source heat pumps, which use pipes that are buried outside your house to extract heat from the ground.

There is also the hybrid heat pump option, which combines an air heat pump with a traditional mains gas boiler. This allows for greater performance during the winter months, with the system switching to the boiler during particularly colder periods.

How much are air source heat pumps?

As air and ground heat pumps work in very different ways, their costs and money-saving benefits also differ.

Based on a four-bedroom detached house, the cost of an air source pump is around £11,000. Despite the outlay, it could pay for itself within 7 years thanks to energy savings worth £360 a year and the Government’s Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which would pay around £1,200 per year for seven years.

Hybrid air source heat pumps deliver similar savings and can reduce your boiler use by 80% over a year, while also benefitting from the Government’s RHI.

How much are ground source heat pumps?

Ground source heat pumps are more expensive and, depending on the size of your property, can cost between £14,000 and £19,000 to install. However, depending on the type of heating system you are replacing, you could save between £530 and £1,000 plus a year. This, combined with the RHI, could provide a profitable income stream over the long term as well as add value to your property.

Am I eligible for the Green Homes Grant?

Every household is eligible for a £5,000 voucher, which covers 2/3 of the cost of the energy-efficient improvements up to the £5,000 maximum. For example, if an air source heat pump costs £11,000, the grant would cover £5,000, as 2/3 of the cost would exceed the maximum. This would leave you to contribute £6,000, which you could make back within the first 4 years of savings and RHI contributions.

If you’re opting for a ground source heat pump worth £15,000, the grant would again cover £5,000, leaving you to contribute £10,000. While this option may seem expensive, it will pay for itself within five years thanks to the energy savings and the RHI.

If you’re on a low income or claim certain benefits, you could get a voucher of up to £10,000 which covers the entire cost of improvements up to the maximum. While a contribution would be required to instal a ground source pump, this would be recouped in just a few years of savings and RHI payments.
