Save on your energy bills with the Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme
The Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme (GHGVS) has been introduced by the Government to improve energy efficiency in domestic properties.
Among the range of primary measures included in the scheme is solar water heating systems, also known as solar thermal systems.
These systems collect free heat from the sun to warm domestic hot water.
While you’ll benefit from free hot water for most of the year, the system will need to be supported by a conventional boiler to provide hot water when solar energy is unavailable during the winter months.
As part of the installation, your property’s roof will need to be fitted with around five square metres of solar panels. You will also need to have a large solar hot water tank fitted in your home, usually between 300 and 400 litres.

The cost of fitting a typical solar thermal heating system is usually between £4,000 - £5,000, which includes the solar panels and tank.
Savings vary depending on the type of property and the system that is being replaced, but will usually be between £60 - £100 a year.
Being able to produce your own hot water will add value to your property, while the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive could see you receive regular payments for the heat you generate.

Am I eligible for the Green Homes Grant?
Every household is eligible for a £5,000 voucher, which covers 2/3 of the cost of the energy-efficient improvements up to the £5,000 maximum. For example, if the solar thermal system costs £4,500, the grant would cover £3,000, leaving you to contribute £1,500.
Though the savings are lower than other eco heating systems, the RHI could provide you with annual payments of between £200 and £500 for 7 years depending on the size of your property.
If you’re on a low income or claim certain benefits, you could get a voucher of up to £10,000 which covers the entire cost of improvements, without the requirement of a customer contribution.
